by Commodity Inside / Wednesday, 23 May 2018 / Published in Automotive

Apple has recently added a further 28 autonomous test cars. It has now 83 autonomous test cars in California, according to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The company is now well ahead of traditional players such as Waymo with 51 cars, Tesla with 39 cars, and Drive.ai with 14 cars.

Commodity Inside understands that Apple is very keen on developing the technology and want to be well ahead in the race. In 2017, Apple only had three cars on the roads. The company aims for developing “CarOS” to licence to other companies, likely in the same way as it has been doing with smartphone’s OS. Moreover, Apple has yet to apply for a driverless licence, which allows companies to test cars without a safety driver onboard.

With other OEMs and companies are also developing their own driverless technologies, the future of Apple technology autonomous technology business model is not entirely clear. Under one scenario, Apple can enter the game with its own model. The company is suspected to be working on its unconfirmed electric car project, codenamed “Titan” which is believed under the research and development stage.
