Global Mobile Phone Market Outlook Databook: Market Assessment and Outlook of Mobile Phones Market by Smartphone and Feature Phone by Sales and by 47 Countries
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The IBM Simon was the first “smartphone” launched back in 1992. However, the term smartphone was only used by Ericsson in 1997. Nokia had just launched its equivalent, Nokia 9000. However, due to its high costs, the number of devices sold was low. In 2001, Blackberry was launched. The popularisation starts, but this model was more used in the business context. The iPhone Android phones were introduced in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Since then, smartphone sales have been growing faster.
The reasons behind this rapid growth were the reduction of the price of the smartphones and the increase on coverage of 3G (and later 4G), which allowed smartphone users to be able to use the internet at good speeds. Another key factor was the emergence of Chinese brands (such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc) which focused on more affordable phones, leading to an expansion on the lower socio-economic groups.
China is the largest mobile phone market in the world. The US handset market is very mature and is dominated by smartphones sales. As most users in the US already own a smartphone, so most sales originating from device replacement instead of upgrading.
