Description
China Telecom and Mobile Market Outlook by Competitors, Subscribers and Smartphones
China is the world’s largest mobile market, with around 1.6 billion active subscribers and operated by only three mobile operators, all state-owned, with minor private shareholders. China Mobile remained the market leader, followed by China Unicorn and China Telecom. The mobile operators are state-owned, but mixed-ownership has been allowed, which should increase private investment in the sector.
Chinese teledensity was also growing fast and surpassed the mark of 100, which means that there are more active mobile numbers than its population. However, its teledensity is still relatively low, when compared to India (the world’s second-largest market) and is the lowest among the BRIC countries. This indicates that there is still scope to grow.
Mobile portability, which currently is not mandatory, is on trial and could become popular in the following years. Moreover, over 50 companies have been approved by the government to launch MVNOs in the country.
The Chinese smartphone market has also been witnessing fast growth. The reasons behind this rapid growth were the reduction of the price of the smartphones and the increase on coverage of 3G (and later 4G), which allowed smartphone users to access the internet at good speeds. Another key factor was the emergence of Chinese brands (such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc.) which focused on more affordable phones, leading to an expansion on the lower socio-economic groups.
All three Chinese telecom companies (China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom) launched 5G services at the end of 2019 after receiving commercial 5G licences from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). They are allocated 5G spectrum across the 2,300 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 4.9GHz bands.
