Description
The US Telecom and Mobile Market Outlook by Competitors, Subscribers and Smartphones
The US is, by far, the largest mobile market in the Americas, with 449 million active subscribers. The market is dominated by four players: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel. Together they account for over 98% of the market.
The number of subscribers and teledensity is likely to continue growing in the next four years, albeit at a slower pace due to near saturation of the market. Hence, the growth will be coming mostly from prepaid customers migrating to postpaid tariffs.
The US is the world’s third-largest smartphone market. Since 2010, the number of smartphones has been increased by a two-digit figure per year until 2016 due to a reduction of its price and the increase in coverage of 3G (and later 4G). The US smartphone market is going to continue growing, albeit at a much slower pace, as new sales will be much more related to customers replacing old smartphone models to newer ones (especially from 2021, as the 5G coverage increases in the country), with a much lower share of customers migrating from standard phones to smartphones.
All the four mobile operators (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel ) now launched 5G services in selected areas across the US and aimed at the higher end market.
The reduction in revenue from voice and increase from data (including the development of the IoT and the rapid growth of connected cars) creates challenges for the mobile operators.
